Description/Bio: Professor Lynch is currently the Executive Vice-President of the Feris Foundation of America and a Professor here at UVa in the Woodrow Wilson Department of Politics. He received his bachelor’s degree in History, magna cum laude, at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1977, then his Masters in International Affairs from Columbia University in 1979, and finally his Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University in 1984. Since then he has published over 35 books and articles, spoken before a number of different institutions, and served as a visiting scholar and professor all around the world, from universities in Shanghai to Berlin to Cambridge, MA.

Description/Bio: Dan Blumenthal joined AEI in November 2004 as a resident fellow in Asian studies. He has served on the U.S.-China Economic and Security Commission since 2005, serving as vice chairman in 2007, and as a member of the Academic Advisory Board for the Congressional U.S.-China Working Group. Previously, Mr. Blumenthal was senior director for China, Taiwan, and Mongolia in the Office of the Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs during the first George W. Bush administration. In addition to writing for AEI’s Asian Outlook series, he has written articles and op-eds for the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, The Weekly Standard, National Review, and numerous edited volumes. He is currently working on a monograph that will examine divides within the China policymaking community.

Description/Bio: Mr. Arthur M. Cummings, II has been the Executive Assistant Director of the United States National Security Branch since January 9, 2008. In this position he oversees the FBI's Counterterrorism, Counterintelligence, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and Intelligence programs, as well as the Terrorist Screening Center. Currently Mr. Cummings is also the lead FBI official responsible for coordination and liaison with the U.S. Director of National Intelligence and the rest of Intelligence Community.

Description/Bio: E. Wayne Merry is a Senior Associate at the American Foreign Policy Council in Washington, DC. He is widely published and a frequent speaker on topics relating to Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus, the Balkans, European security and trans-Atlantic relations. In twenty-six years in the United States Foreign Service, he worked as a diplomat and political analyst in Moscow, East Berlin, Athens, New York and Tunis, and served in the State, Defense and Treasury Departments as well as on Capitol Hill and with the US Marine Corps. He studied at the University of Wisconsin (Madison), Princeton University’s Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and the US Army Russian Institute.

Description/Bio: Douglas H. Paal is vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He previously served as unofficial U.S. representative to Taiwan as director of the American Institute in Taiwan from April 2002 to January 2006. He was on the National Security Council staffs of Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush between 1986 and 1993 as director of Asian Affairs, and then as senior director and special assistant to the President.
